Cut Your Cloud Bill: Ten Practical Ways

Cloud bills have a habit of creeping up. Nobody decides to spend more. A test server gets left running, a bigger machine is picked "just in case", backups pile up, and one month the invoice makes someone's eyebrows rise.

The good news is that most bills contain waste, and finding it doesn't take a specialist. Here are ten places to look, roughly in order of effort.

1. Look at the bill itself

Before changing anything, find out where the money goes. Open your provider's cost explorer and sort by service. Usually a few items account for most of the spend. Fix those first, since saving ten percent on your biggest item beats saving half on a tiny one.

2. Switch off what nobody uses

Old test servers, forgotten demo environments, unattached disks, idle load balancers and unused IP addresses all cost money while doing nothing. A quick tour of each region in your account often turns up surprises. If you're not sure about something, shut it down and wait a week to see if anyone complains, rather than deleting it.

3. Turn off non-production at night

Development and staging environments rarely need to run at 3 a.m. or on weekends. Scheduling them to stop outside working hours can cut their cost substantially, and it's easy to automate.

4. Right-size your servers

Teams often pick a large server to be safe and never revisit it. Check actual CPU and memory use over a few weeks. If a machine sits at ten percent, a smaller one will do the same job for less. Providers often have tools that suggest this for you. Make changes gradually and watch performance.

5. Use commitment discounts for steady workloads

If you know you'll run something for a year or more, such as a database or core servers, providers offer sizeable discounts in exchange for a commitment. Don't commit for things you're unsure about. Start with the stable baseline and leave the variable part on regular pricing.

6. Consider spot or preemptible capacity for flexible jobs

Spare capacity sold cheaply can be taken back with little warning. It's a poor fit for your main website and a good fit for batch jobs, build servers and anything that can safely restart.

7. Tidy your storage

Old backups, snapshots, logs and files nobody opens add up quietly. Set lifecycle rules so data moves to cheaper storage after a while and gets deleted when it's no longer needed. Check you're not keeping years of snapshots of a disk that has since been deleted.

8. Watch data transfer

Moving data out of the cloud, or between regions, is charged and easily overlooked. Keep services that talk to each other close together, use a CDN for files that many people download, and compress what you send.

9. Don't over-buy managed services

Managed databases and tools save effort, but check you're using the right tier. A production-grade cluster for a side project, or a high-availability setup for a database nobody depends on, is wasted money. Match the service level to how much downtime you can tolerate.

10. Make it somebody's job

Costs drift when nobody owns them. Tag every resource with a team or project so you can see who spends what. Set a budget with an alert, so you hear about a spike on day three, not at month end. And review the bill once a month, even briefly. A fifteen-minute habit beats an annual panic.

Watch out for false savings

Cutting too hard can cost more than it saves. Shrinking a server until it's slow loses customers. Deleting a backup you needed hurts far more than its monthly fee. And an engineer spending a week to save a small amount each month isn't a bargain. Focus on the large, easy wins first.

A realistic way to begin

Spend an hour this week on three steps: sort the bill by service, list what's running that nobody can explain, and set a budget alert. That alone often pays for itself before the month is over.
